RPG-SMP 2.5 Update | Age of OakHaven

Big one today. This update has been cooking for most of the season and it changes what "progression" means on RPG. We're adding a whole new world with its own levels, money, monsters, quests and a boss, the class system is getting its long promised update!

Grab a drink, this is a long post.

🎉 Launch Celebration

  • 15% off the store for two weeks. Network wide, on everything except Petals and subscriptions.
  • Double XP and Tokens in OakHaven, this weekend only. Everything you kill, mine, gather and hand in pays twice as much. If you were going to grind the realm, grind it now.

🌳 Introducing: Realms

Our first Realm is OakHaven, a woodland realm full of forests, caves, a mysterious tower at the end of the world, a Colosseum, and a lot of things that want to kill you.. It has its own leveling system, its own currency, its own unique monsters, its own shops and its own quests.

We built the Realms system so we can keep adding new ones, and OakHaven is very much the first of several. Everything below is about OakHaven specifically, but the same systems will show up in every Realm that comes after it.

Getting there

Head to Spawn and talk to the Realms Master. He'll open the Realm Selector for you, and from there you click OakHaven and hit Join. If you'd rather skip the walk, /realms opens the same menu from anywhere, or you can just type /realms join oakhaven.

While in OakHaven, it has some restrictions:
  • Your gear doesn't lose durability while you're inside a Realm. Tools, weapons, armour, all of it. Go nuts.
  • Elytras are disabled in OakHaven. If you start gliding it will stop you.
  • The world is protected. You can't build or break blocks in OakHaven, with the exception of the ores and plants you're meant to harvest and the inside of a Storefront you're renting.
  • Tuennling does not work in OakHaven.

Realm Levels

Every Realm has its own leveling system. You earn OakHaven XP by killing OakHaven monsters, mining and foraging, finishing quest tasks, and placing well in boss fights and events. Every time you gain XP you'll see it above your hot-bar.

There is no level cap. Your level shows up in a coloured bracket that changes colour as you climb, so people can tell at a glance how long you've been grinding. Type /rlevel to see your level, total XP and how much you need for the next one.

Each Realm keeps a top 10 leaderboard by level, so there's a reason to keep going past the point where it's "useful".

Currency

OakHaven has two currencies of its own:

CurrencyIconHow you get it
OakHaven TokensSelling what you hunt and gather to realm shops, quest rewards, event rewards
Boss SoulsFighting the realm boss

Tokens buy the OakHaven gear and everything else in the Merchant. Souls buy things from the Boss Shop. Neither of them are dollars, and you can't convert between them. Dollars still matter in OakHaven, but only for two things: renting Storefronts and feeding the boss.

Monsters

OakHaven is populated by custom monsters, all with their own models and attacks. The trails around town are gentle and mostly passive. The caves are home to something that likes to lay traps. The wildwood and the mountains are where the nastier stuff lives.

Every monster drops something you can sell or hand in for quests, and a few of them have a very small chance at something worth a lot more.

Mining & Foraging
  • Mining happens in the caves. There are ores scattered around the cave to mine and collect special ingots.
  • Foraging happens out in the vast forest. There are bushes scattered around the surface to collect special berries.
Shops

The Shop is located in a building near Spawn where all Shop NPCs live. If you're Celestial rank you also get /rshop, which opens the shop board from anywhere in OakHaven so you don't have to walk back. There are four shops:

  • OakHaven Merchant: takes your Tokens. Sells the OakHaven gear set plus a rotating mix of every-day items.
  • Hunting: sell what you get from monsters for Tokens.
  • Mining & Foraging: sell what you mine and gather for Tokens.

OakHaven Gear

The Merchant sells a full set of Fabled gear made for the realm: a four piece armour set, a sword, a bow, a pickaxe, an axe and a shield. Each piece is 40,000 ☆ and they're all Season Vault items.

Every piece has an ability that only works inside OakHaven. The weapons do more damage to OakHaven mobs, the tools make mining and foraging faster or more rewarding, the shield deals with a problem you'll notice the first time something big hits you, and wearing the full armour set gives you a stack of bonuses including a short burst of flight. Check the item lore in the Merchant for the exact numbers.

The set is deliberately realm focused. None of it does anything special anywhere else.

Questlines

There are five Quest NPCs in OakHaven, each with a long questline of tiers. Talk to them to start, and they'll walk you through it with dialogue. Every task rewards OakHaven XP when you finish it, and every tier pays Tokens.

NPCQuestlineWhat you'll be doing
AliceForagingGathering from the forest and cooking things for her
TrentMiningMining the caves and delivering what you find
CassieMob SlayerClearing monsters out of specific areas: the trails, the caves, the wildwood, Sage Mountain
LilyMerchantSelling specific items and quantities through the realm shops
JackBoss SlayerKilling the realm boss, over and over, up to 100 times

Talk to the Quest Master near Spawn who will give you directions to your desired Quest NPC to begin your journey!

The Boss: Deadroot

OakHaven has a realm boss, and it doesn't spawn on a timer. It spawns when the community pays for it.

Talk to The Curator near the Colosseum to contribute to the Boss Pool. When the pool hits $50,000,000, Deadroot wakes up!

Some things to know about the fight:

  • You have 30 minutes. If Deadroot is still alive when the timer runs out it leaves and nobody gets anything.
  • Rewards are based on damage. You have to hit the boss to be eligible, and if you leave the realm before it dies you lose eligibility.
  • If it kills you, you respawn nearby rather than at realm spawn.
  • If it gets dragged out of the arena it gets sent back to its spawn point.
  • There's a 10 minute cooldown after a fight ends before the pool can trigger again.

When it dies, everyone who took part gets a summary of where they placed and how much damage they did. Rewards come in two forms:

PlacementReward
1st25 Petals + 50 OakHaven XP
2nd10 Petals + 30 OakHaven XP
3rd5 Petals + 20 OakHaven XP

Souls are the only way to buy from the Boss Shop, and the Boss Shop has several new items! Including new Tracker Orbs (explained later) and a new fabled item called Bloodright.

Realm Events

Roughly every two hours OakHaven rolls one of three events. You'll get warnings in chat leading up to it, and a boss bar while it's running. Each one lasts 30 minutes.

  • Infestation: the realm is forced into night, mob spawns go up 10x, and every monster can spawn anywhere in the realm. The community has to hit 5,000 kills before the timer runs out. Top killers get placement rewards: 1st place is 75 Petals, 2,000 ☆ and 100 OakHaven XP, and there are payouts all the way down to 50th.
  • Overgrowth: the forest grows back 2.5x faster, foraging drops are doubled, and the rarer plants are twice as likely to appear.
  • Mine Siege: mob spawns double, mining drop chances double, and the rarer ores are twice as likely to appear.

Storefronts

Similar to our older SMP gamemode, we've introduced a small marketplace in our OakHaven town. There are 12 rentable market stalls. Rent one and it's yours: only you can place blocks, break blocks and open chests inside it. Redstone will not work in inside of Storefronts.

Renting a Storefront is a Celestial rank perk. You don't need the rank to be part of one though: a renter can add any player as a manager, and managers can build and open chests in that stall just like the owner.

  • Open /realms storefronts or talk to the NPC standing at an empty stall to rent it.
  • Rent is paid in dollars and covers 1 day. Stalls are 100,000, 125,000 or 250,000 depending on the spot.
  • You can extend your lease up to 14 days ahead. Each extension costs 10% more than the last one.
  • One stall per player in OakHaven.
  • While you're renting, you sell to OakHaven shops for 25% more. The shop menu will show the bonus on the price.
  • You can set a home inside your own stall. It's the one exception to the no-homes restriction.
  • Stand in your stall and type /storefront to manage it: extend the lease, add or remove managers, customize the first line of the hologram above it, or end the lease early for a 50% refund on the time left.
  • You'll get warnings in chat as the lease runs down, starting a day out.

Please read this bit: when a lease expires or is cancelled, the stall is cleared to air. Every block, every chest, every item frame. Take your stuff out before it runs out. Homes set inside an expired stall are removed too.

⚒️ Introducing: Fabled Items

Fabled Items are a tier of gear that sits above anything vanilla can do. Each one is still a normal Minecraft item underneath, so it enchants and behaves the way you'd expect, but it carries an ability that nothing else on the server has, along with its own name and its own custom model and is unbreakable by default.

You can tell one at a glance by its tooltip. Every Fabled Item lists an ITEM EFFECTS block telling you exactly what it does and when the effect applies, whether that's while held, while worn, or when fired.

Season Vault Access

You'll also see a Season Vault Access ✔ line on the tooltip. That means the item is allowed into a Season Vault, which is how you carry gear across a server reset instead of losing it with the season.

We'll go into how Season Vaults work properly when a reset is actually on the horizon. For now, all you need to know is that the mark on the tooltip is a promise: that item can come with you.

What's available now

  • The OakHaven set: nine pieces sold by the OakHaven Merchant for Tokens, covered further up this update. Every piece has an ability that only works inside the realm, and the armour comes pre-enchanted to Celestial rune levels.
  • Bloodright: a scythe bought from the Boss Shop with Boss Souls. While you're holding it, every hit has a 25% chance to make the target bleed for 5 seconds, dealing damage every second on top of the hit that caused it. It stacks with everything else you're running, so it's at its best against things with a lot of health that you're already fighting for a while.

Getting your hands on them

OakHaven is the home of Fabled Items. The realm's shops are the main place you'll find them, which is another reason to care about Tokens and Souls.

Outside of the shops they are extremely rare.

There are 50 Fabled Items in total, and they'll be released gradually over the coming months. Today's are the first handful.

🔮 Introducing: Tracker Orbs

Ever wanted to know how many mobs a sword has actually killed, or how many blocks a pickaxe has chewed through? Tracker Orbs attach a counter to an item and keep it there for good.

How to use them

Same as Runes: drag and drop. Pick the orb up onto your cursor, click it onto the item you want to track, and the orb is consumed. The counter appears as a line on the item's lore and starts climbing.

The orbs

OrbCountsGoes on
Stat Tracker OrbEvery kill you make with itSwords, axes, bows, crossbows, tridents, maces
Block Tracker OrbEvery block you break with itPickaxes, axes, shovels
Flight Tracker OrbTime spent gliding, down to the secondElytras

A couple of things we made sure work properly: shooting something with a tracked bow credits the bow even if you swap to a sword while the arrow is still in the air, and killing a stack of ten mobs counts as ten rather than one. Breaking blocks in creative doesn't count, so staff can't pad their own numbers.

Track Remover

The Track Remover pulls every tracker off an item and hands them back as orbs with their counts intact. Drag and drop it the same way, then apply the returned orb to the new item and carry on from where you left off.

Tracker Orbs and the Track Remover are all sold in the Boss Shop in OakHaven for Boss Souls.

⚔️ Classes Overhaul: Specialties

Back in the 2.1 post we said a class overhaul was coming. Here it is.

Until now every class capped at level 5. Classes now go to level 10, and the second half of the tree is where it gets interesting.

How it works

Levels 1 to 5 are unchanged and shared by everyone in the class. At level 6 you pick a Specialty. Each class has two, and each Specialty is its own branch of five levels (6 through 10) with its own perks, ending in a Signature upgrade at 10.

Each branch is bought and levelled separately. You can buy levels on both branches of a class if you want, and swapping between them keeps whatever you've paid for. Only one Specialty is active at a time though. Class Reset Tokens work the same as before, and any Specialty levels you've bought are remembered if you come back to that class later.

Levels 1 to 5 cost the same as they always have. Specialty levels are priced per branch, so if you want both Specialties maxed you pay the ladder twice.

LevelMoneyPetals
6$150,000,0006,000
7$225,000,0007,500
8$350,000,00010,000
9$500,000,00012,500
10$750,000,00015,000

The class menu has been redone as well. Each class now has its own upgrade screen that scrolls sideways through the levels, and you can see both branches side by side.

"Signature timing to 35%" means your Signature ability's cooldown reduction and duration bonus both become 35%. It replaces the 20% from level 5, it doesn't stack on top of it.

Perk settings

Not every perk is wanted all the time. /classes settings lets you turn individual levels on and off per class. Turning one off disables just that level's effects and leaves everything else alone. Familiars, auras and passive potions update straight away.

📦 Introducing: Stash

This one is a fix for a problem we've had for a long time.

When a drop gets cancelled, for example by Anti-Drop asking you to confirm, or by a Dungeon that doesn't let you drop items, the item is supposed to go back into your inventory. If your inventory is full, it had nowhere to go, and it was gone. Same story for crafting results sitting in a table when the menu closes, items on your cursor when a chest shuts, tridents that despawn before they get back to you, and reward commands that try to give you an item when you have no space.

All of that now goes into your Stash.

  • Type /stash to open it. Click a stack to claim it, or use Claim All to grab everything that fits.
  • Items sit in the Stash for 30 days from when they were captured, then they're gone for real. The menu shows the expiry on each item.
  • You'll get a reminder in chat when something is added, when you log in, and every 30 minutes while there's something waiting.
  • Claims are whole stacks only. If a stack doesn't fit, it stays in the Stash until you make room.

🗺️ Player Warps Overhaul

Player Warps got a proper pass this update. The menu has been rebuilt, warps can be locked down to the people you want, and a few of the limits that were annoying everyone have been raised.

New and changed commands

  • /pw move (warp): relocates your warp to where you're standing.
  • /pw favorite (warp): saves a warp to your Favorites tab so you can find it again without digging through the menu.
  • /pw cost set/remove (warp) (cost): charge players to teleport to your warp. Capped at $500,000.
  • /pw whitelist enable/disable (warp): turn the whitelist on or off for a warp.
  • /pw whitelist set/remove (warp) (player): add or remove a player from that warp's whitelist.
  • /pw whitelist list (warp): see everyone on the whitelist.

Cost changes

ActionCost
Create a warp with /pw create (warp)$250,000
Relocate a warp with /pw move (warp)$2,000,000
Advertisement slot on the Player Warp menu$10,000,000

Menu changes

  • Major GUI changes across the whole Player Warp menu.
  • Removed the PvP category.
  • Added a Favorites tab that shows the warps you've saved.
  • Warp descriptions can now be up to 90 characters (was 50).
  • Ban reasons can now be up to 90 characters (was 50).
  • Warp names can now be up to 16 characters (was 10).
  • Warps that cost more than $10 to teleport to now ask you to confirm before charging you.
  • Added a Ratings tab to the warp manager so you can see who rated your warp.
  • Added a Banned Players tab to the warp manager so you can manage who's banned from it.

🌱 More OakHaven on the way

Everything above is what OakHaven launches with, not what it ends as. We already have the next round of ideas written up and started, and they'll be rolling out over the coming weeks rather than waiting for a 2.6.

We're keeping the details to ourselves for now, but expect more to see, more to fight and more to do in the realm as the weeks go on.

📜 Final Note

OakHaven is a new system with a lot of moving parts and we fully expect things to need tuning. Prices, drop rates, boss pool size, event goals, all of it is on the table. Play it, tell us what feels off, and we'll adjust. Feedback is always welcome in the Discord as usual.

This is also the foundation for more Realms down the line, so what you see here is the start rather than the finish.
